The power of one photo and a special story leads to a scholarship for young boy.

This incredible image has gone viral around the internet and for a very good reason too. It was taken by Joyce Gilos Torrefranca a 20 year old medical technology student while passing a fast food restaurant in Cebu in the Philippines. The girl who took the picture posted it to social media on the 23rd of June with a caption that read “I got inspired by a kid.” The picture is of a little 9 year old boy who can be seen studying in the light of a McDonald’s restaurant in the town.

The picture was very quickly spread around the internet and shared thousands of times prompting the ABS-CBN News agency to track down the little boy to cover the story. Daniel Cabrera is the boys name and every night he sets up his little table in front of the restaurant so he can study as his family have no electricity. As the story unfolds the family of 4 lost their home in a fire and are now living inside a local mini grocery store that is owned by Daniel’s mothers employer. He lives there with his mother Christina Espinosa and his two siblings. Daniel’s father died in 2013.

Ms Espinosa is a 42 year old single parent and earns only 80 pesos ($1.77) a day and has to also work at night selling cigarettes and candy on the streets to afford to look after her young family. Ms Espinosa told the news agency that her son Daniel has always been a very studious and determined boy and always insisted on going to school even sometimes without lunch money in his pockets. She said he wants to follow his dreams of one day becoming a Police officer.

Since the story has gone viral and broke on the news channel there has been an outpouring of support for this little kid. The local church and government social welfare office have been receiving donations of aid on his behalf. Daniel has been sent money, school supplies, a uniform and even a lamp to help him study at night and he has also been offered a scholarship to get him through to college thanks to a regional politician named Samuel Pagdilao.  Joyce Gilos Torrefranca the girl that took the picture was happy to have learned that the photo that she shared has done so much good.

She was quoted on Facebook saying “I didn’t think that a simple photo can make a huge difference. Thank you guys for sharing the photo. With that, we were able to help Daniel in reaching his dreams. I hope Daniel’s story will continue touching our hearts so that we will always be inspired and motivated in every situation we face in life.”

What an incredible story with a nice outcome for little Daniel and hopefully it will shed some light on the less fortunate people in the world and get them some help.
